AEO agency in Melbourne: the most crowded AI SEO answer we measured
The short answer
We are not in Melbourne: we are a Brisbane-based answer engine optimisation practice and deliver remotely, in writing, at published prices. Melbourne produced the most fragmented answer we measured. For "AI SEO agency Melbourne" an AI engine cited 17 pages from 15 different domains in September 2026, and 14 of them were agencies' and consultants' own pages. Melbourne-named pages also leaked into national answers more than any other city's: seven were cited for five questions that never mentioned Melbourne. Local competition for the answer is real, and so is the chance to be named nationally from a Melbourne base.
- September 2026, "AI SEO agency Melbourne": 17 citations from 15 domains; 14 were agency or consultant pages, only 3 were lists.
- Seven Melbourne-named pages were cited for five non-Melbourne questions. Sydney managed four, Brisbane two.
- The one roundup cited for the Melbourne question was published by an agency that also competes for it.
- When the answer is mostly agency pages, the quality and specificity of your own page matters more than usual.
Melbourne’s market, briefly
Melbourne is the city adding people fastest in absolute terms: Greater Melbourne grew by 105,030 residents in the year to June 2025, to 5,435,590, more than Sydney or Brisbane added. Victoria had 773,986 actively trading businesses at 30 June 2026, up 2.6% in a year.
The centre of the city is unusually dense with advisory work. In the City of Melbourne council area, professional, scientific and technical services make up 21.4% of its 46,783 registered businesses, against 12.6% for Victoria, and finance and insurance 15.7% against 4.9%. Invest Victoria lists financial and insurance services, healthcare, and professional, scientific and technical services as the state’s three largest industries by value added in FY24.
Those are high-consideration categories — the kind where a buyer asks an assistant for a shortlist before contacting anyone — and, as the next section shows, Melbourne’s own AI SEO market is already competing hard for the same kind of answer.
What the engine cited for a Melbourne question
On 19 September 2026 we asked an AI answer engine 29 questions about AI visibility and recorded every source it cited (full data). The Melbourne question was “AI SEO agency Melbourne”. Compared with the other two cities:
| Melbourne | Sydney | Brisbane | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Question asked | “AI SEO agency Melbourne” | “AI search optimisation agency Sydney” | “AEO consultant Brisbane” |
| Citations | 17 | 14 | 20 |
| Different domains | 15 | 12 | 18 |
| Agencies’ own pages | 14 | 10 | 11 |
| Lists, roundups, directories | 3 | 4 | 7 |
| City-named pages cited for other questions | 7, across 5 questions | 4, across 3 | 2, across 2 |
The three questions were worded differently, so this is not a clean comparison between cities. But two Melbourne patterns are strong enough to act on.
The answer is mostly agency pages. Fourteen of 17 citations were agencies and consultants describing their own Melbourne AI SEO services. When the engine leans on owned pages like this, the specifics on the page carry more weight than usual: what the service includes, what it costs, how it is measured, stated plainly enough to be quoted. The Princeton GEO research found that adding statistics and quotations raised visibility by roughly 32% and 41%; that is the kind of content that gets lifted.
Melbourne pages travel. Seven Melbourne-named pages were cited for five other questions, including “answer engine optimisation agency Australia”, “generative engine optimisation agency Australia”, “how much does an AEO agency cost in Australia” and even the Sydney question. A well-built Melbourne page is being used as an answer to national questions when nothing national fits better.
One caution. The only roundup cited for the Melbourne question was published by an agency that also had its own Melbourne AI SEO page in the same answer. Roundups written by competitors are a normal part of this market, and engines read them anyway, so treat any single list with scepticism — including when you are on it.
What a Melbourne business should ask
“Could our own page be the cited page?” In an answer made mostly of service pages, yours has to be specific: the service, the city, the price range, the method, and evidence. Ask a provider to show you which of your pages they expect to be cited, and why.
“Are we testing national questions too?” If Melbourne pages are being used for national answers, a Melbourne business may be closer to national visibility than it thinks. The prompt set should include both.
“Who wrote the lists we are being measured against?” If the cited roundups in your category are published by competitors, inclusion is not a neutral signal. Your provider should say who is behind each source on the citation map.
“What is the review position?” Brands with no active review profile appeared in 1% of AI answers in one large study; brands actively collecting and responding to reviews appeared in 75.3%. In a fragmented answer, that is one of the few levers that works the same for everyone.
If you are one of those CBD professional or financial services firms, AEO for professional services covers the directories engines draw on in your profession and the advertising rules that limit what you can publish.
Remote, from Brisbane
We are a Brisbane-based sole-trader practice with no Melbourne office, and we will not list a virtual one. The work is written: email intake, a prompt set you approve, a report your existing agency can use. Prices are published and identical in every city, and the free check will tell you in five minutes whether you appear at all.
Questions people actually ask
Do you have a Melbourne office?
No. We are based in Brisbane and work with Melbourne businesses remotely, in writing. Nothing in the audit or programme requires a meeting, and an optional walkthrough call is available after the audit. If you need a provider in the room, a Melbourne agency will suit you better, and the questions on this page apply to them too.
Why is the Melbourne AI SEO answer so fragmented?
On our September run, the engine drew 17 citations from 15 domains for the Melbourne question, with almost no repeats. The simplest reading is that many Melbourne agencies have published specific AI SEO pages and no single list or directory has become the default source. That makes the answer easier to enter and harder to own; the measurement should be re-run monthly before reading too much into one sample.
What does AEO cost for a Melbourne business?
Our prices do not change by city: $2,500 + GST for a fixed audit and $3,500 to $7,500 a month + GST for a programme, three-month baseline then month to month. What other agencies charge: Australian mid-market AEO retainers generally run $3,000 to $8,000 a month.
Can a Melbourne business be recommended for national questions?
On our data, more easily than businesses in other cities. Melbourne-named pages were cited for five questions that did not mention Melbourne, including national hiring and pricing questions. That suggests engines are willing to use a strong city page as an answer to a national question when nothing national fits better.
