AEO agencies in Australia, ranked by how often AI engines cite them (October 2026)
When an AI engine answers "best AEO agency in Australia", it mostly cites ranked lists — 11 of 18 pages in our October 2026 run — and almost every list we checked puts its own publisher first. This is the other way of doing it: a ranking built only from what the engine actually cited, with the method, the raw data and our own score in the table.
The short answer
On 17 October 2026 we put ten hiring questions to an AI answer engine (Perplexity Sonar) and recorded every source it cited. Counting only providers' own pages — not ranked lists, directories or news sites — 99 providers were cited, and none in more than 3 of the ten answers. The top group, at 3 of ten, was localiq.com, clearwateragency.com.au, intesols.com.au, magnetoitsolutions.com, prosperitymedia.com.au, searchmaxxed.com, titanblue.com.au. AEO Services was cited in 0.
- For "best AEO agency in Australia", 11 of the 18 pages the engine cited were ranked lists.
- Of the 17 cited lists we opened, 16 put their own publisher first.
- The most-cited single domain for hiring questions was a directory: Semrush's agency directory, in 4 of ten answers (12 citations).
- This measures visibility in AI answers. It says nothing about the quality of anyone's client work.
The ranking: providers whose own pages were cited
Ranked by the number of the ten hiring questions in which at least one of the provider's own pages was cited, then by total citations of those pages, then alphabetically. The last column is a separate spot check on a second engine (an OpenAI model with web search) over the same ten questions.

Method
- Questions: the ten hiring questions from our fixed, published 29-question set, including "best AEO agency in Australia", city questions for Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, and a pricing question. The full list is on the citation index page.
- Engine: Perplexity Sonar through its API on 17 October 2026, one run, every cited URL recorded. Second engine: an OpenAI model with web search over the same ten questions, as a spot check.
- What counts: a citation of a page on the provider's own domain that is not a ranked list (a title naming plural agencies or companies alongside "best", "top" or a number). Directories, news sites and LinkedIn articles are excluded.
- Ordering: questions cited in, then citations, then alphabetical. Ties are common, so treat rows with the same counts as equal.
- Limits: one engine, one day, ten questions. AI answers are non-deterministic and a single run is a sample. The month-on-month series on the index page is where the signal is.
- Our own position: shown at its measured value, which is zero. We do not place ourselves in the ranking by any other means.
What to do with this if you are hiring
Use it as a shortlist of who is visible, then judge method directly: ask each provider for a prompt set from a past engagement, its own citation share, and what it would do off your website. Questions about this ranking
Who is the best AEO agency in Australia?
Nobody outside an agency's client list can say, and we will not pretend to. What can be measured is who AI engines actually cite. In our October 2026 run of ten hiring questions, no provider's own pages were cited in more than 3 of the ten; the top group was localiq.com, clearwateragency.com.au, intesols.com.au, magnetoitsolutions.com, prosperitymedia.com.au, searchmaxxed.com, titanblue.com.au. Being cited is evidence of visibility in AI answers, not of results for clients.
Why is AEO Services not at the top of this list?
Because we are ranking by measurement, and our measured score is 0. aeoservices.com.au was not cited for any of the ten hiring questions on either engine in October 2026. A ranking that put its publisher first would be the thing this page exists to avoid.
Why are the "best agencies" lists counted separately?
Because for "best AEO agency in Australia", 11 of the 18 pages the engine cited were ranked lists, and of the cited lists we checked, 16 of 17 put their own publisher first. Counting a self-ranked list as a citation for its publisher would reward the format rather than the provider, so lists, directories and news sites are shown in their own tables and only providers' own pages score.
