AI SEO agency in Australia: what you are actually buying
The short answer
An AI SEO agency gets your business named and cited when buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews who to use. AI SEO, answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO) are three names for that one job. Be careful with the label, though: some agencies use "AI SEO" to mean ordinary SEO done with AI tools, which is a different product. Done properly, most of the work happens off your own website, because earned media is cited roughly 325% more than brand-owned content. Mid-market Australian retainers run about $3,000 to $8,000 a month.
- AI SEO, AEO and GEO describe the same work. Australians search "AI SEO agency" about 880 times a month; "AEO services" about 390.
- Two different products share the label: optimising for AI answers, and using AI to do traditional SEO. Ask which one is in the proposal.
- In our September 2026 measurement, national "best agency" questions were answered almost entirely from third-party lists; city questions mostly from agencies' own pages.
- No agency can guarantee a mention. Ask for its own citation share instead. Ours is published, and it started at zero.
Same job, three names, and one impostor
The words matter less than they seem, but they decide what you find when you search. In Semrush’s Australian database, “AI SEO agency” and “AI SEO services” each draw about 880 searches a month, “AI search optimisation” about 480, “AEO services” about 390 and “AEO agency” about 110. Buyers type AI SEO. Practitioners write AEO or GEO. They are all describing one piece of work: measuring how often AI engines name and cite a business when someone asks for a recommendation, and then changing the things those engines rely on.
The impostor is a different product sold under the same two words. “AI SEO” is also used for conventional SEO done with AI tools: AI-drafted articles, automated keyword clustering, AI-assisted technical audits. That can be good SEO. It is aimed at Google’s ranked list of links, though, not at the paragraph an assistant writes. You can see the overlap in our own data: one of the pages an engine cited for “AI SEO agency Melbourne” was titled “AI-Powered SEO Services in Melbourne”. So the first question for any proposal with AI SEO on it is short: optimised for AI answers, or done with AI tools?
If you want the longer history of the labels, and why “GEO” also trips over geotechnical engineering in Australia, see GEO vs AEO vs SEO.
What an AI SEO proposal should actually contain
A useful test is whether you could hand the scope to someone else and they would know what to do. Five lines should be specific:
| Line in the scope | What “specific” looks like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| The prompt set | A written list of 30–50 questions in your buyers’ words, which you keep | Without a fixed list, there is no way to tell improvement from noise |
| The citation map | The domains and pages engines quote for your category today | This is the target list for everything that follows |
| Off-site work | How many third-party placements, directory listings and review-profile tasks per month | Earned media is cited roughly 325% more than owned content |
| Identity work | Which profiles and records will be made consistent, and the organisation markup that ties them together | Engines recommend businesses they can identify with certainty |
| Reporting | Citation share against the same prompts, monthly, including bad months | AI answers vary run to run; one month is a sample, not a trend |
What should not be the centrepiece: schema markup on its own (a 1,885-page study found no measurable citation lift), a proprietary “visibility score” you cannot audit, or a monitoring dashboard resold at several times its retail price.
What this market looks like from the inside
We ran ten hiring questions through an AI answer engine in September 2026 and recorded every source it cited. The result is published in full in our citation index, but two patterns matter if you are about to hire someone.
National questions are answered from lists. For “best AEO agency in Australia”, 18 of the 19 pages the engine cited were ranked lists or roundups, most of them written by agencies or lead-generation sites. Only one was an agency’s own service page. Whoever is on those lists gets the recommendation.
City questions are answered from agency pages. For “AI SEO agency Melbourne”, 14 of the 17 cited pages were agencies’ and consultants’ own service pages; only three were lists or directories. For “AI search optimisation agency Sydney”, 10 of 14 were agency pages. Local intent pulls the engine towards whoever has a clear, specific page for that city.
Two practical consequences. First, an agency’s presence in AI answers for its own city tells you something about its craft; its absence from national roundups tells you less, because many of those lists are written by agencies about the market they compete in. Second, the category is fragmented: about 40 Australian agencies describe themselves as AEO providers, roughly five had published a formal methodology at the time of one review, and when four engines were asked to name the best ones they produced 24 different firms with almost no agreement. Brand recognition is not a shortcut here.
Three tests that take five minutes
1. Ask for their own number. An AI SEO agency should be able to show how often engines cite it for the questions its own buyers ask. If it cannot measure itself, it is not measuring you. Ours is published in the index above, and at the September baseline it was zero, because the site launched that day.
2. Ask “for AI, or with AI?” If the answer is mostly about AI-written content and AI tools, you are buying conventional SEO with a new label. That may be what you need, but price it as SEO.
3. Ask what happens off your website. Get a number: placements, listings, review-profile work per month. If everything in scope happens on your own site, the proposal is aimed at the weakest lever.

What we offer
We are a Brisbane-based practice delivering remotely across Australia, in writing, with no calls required. There are three ways in, and the prices are published:
- The free check — run the measurement yourself in five minutes, in your browser.
- The $2,500 + GST audit — the full prompt set, citation map, entity audit and costed action list, in ten business days. You can take it to any agency, including your current one.
- A monthly programme at $3,500–$7,500 a month + GST — we do the work and re-measure every month, three-month baseline then month to month.
Who it is not for: businesses whose buyers do not ask assistants before they buy. If the audit shows that, it will say so.
Questions people actually ask
What does an AI SEO agency do?
It measures how often AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews name and cite your business for the questions your buyers ask, then works on the inputs those engines rely on: third-party coverage, directory and review presence, consistent identity signals, and content written so it can be quoted. A good one re-runs the same set of questions every month and reports the result whether it moved or not.
Is AI SEO the same as AEO or GEO?
For buying purposes, yes. AI SEO is the term most Australian buyers search for; answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO) are the terms practitioners and researchers tend to use. The only meaningful difference is with agencies that use "AI SEO" to mean using AI tools to do conventional SEO, which targets Google's ranked results rather than AI answers.
How much does an AI SEO agency cost in Australia?
What other agencies charge: mid-market retainers generally run $3,000 to $8,000 a month, one-off audits $1,500 to $5,000, and enterprise programmes $10,000 to $25,000 a month or more. The spread mostly reflects how much earned-media and placement work is included, which is the labour-intensive part. Our own prices are $2,500 + GST for a fixed audit and $3,500 to $7,500 a month + GST for a programme.
Can an AI SEO agency guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No. AI answers are non-deterministic and the providers change how they retrieve sources without notice; ChatGPT cut Reddit citations by at least 73% in a single month in August 2026. An agency can measure citation share across a fixed prompt set and move the inputs the evidence says matter. A guarantee is a promise about a system the seller does not control.
Should I hire an AI SEO agency or ask my current SEO agency to do it?
Either can work. What matters is whether the plan includes work on other people's websites, not just yours. If your SEO agency can show you a prompt set, a citation map for your category and a plan for the roundups and directories engines quote, keep them. If the AI work is a line item about schema markup and AI-written blog posts, it is aimed at the wrong lever.
