Is AEO worth it in 2026? The evidence, both sides

The short answer

For some businesses yes, for many not yet, and the evidence supports both halves. The case for: AI answers now sit in front of a very large audience and they take clicks. Pew found Google users clicked a result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared against 15% without, and a randomised experiment found Google's AI Mode cut click-through by 18.8 percentage points. In Australia, 58% of people aged 14 and over used an AI tool in a four-week period in early 2026. The case against: AI referrals are still a sliver of traffic — 0.2% to 0.32% of visits in two large datasets — and whether they convert better is disputed. AEO is worth paying for when your buyers research before they buy and one extra client covers a meaningful share of the cost.

  • AI summaries roughly halve clicks on Google results (8% vs 15% of visits, Pew), and a field experiment confirms the effect is causal.
  • Australia: 58% of people 14+ used an AI tool in four weeks (Roy Morgan); 12% say AI is now their main way of finding information (Telsyte).
  • Against: AI platforms send 0.2%–0.32% of website visits, and two large studies found AI traffic converting no better than email or organic search.
  • The value is mostly in being on the shortlist, not in the click — which is also why it is hard to measure in analytics.

The case for

The audience is enormous. Google said in May 2026 that AI Overviews have more than 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode more than 1 billion. OpenAI said in October 2026 that more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT each week. These are the companies’ own figures, but even discounted heavily they describe a channel nobody can ignore.

AI answers take clicks from ordinary results. Pew tracked 68,879 real Google searches by 900 US adults: users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1%. Ahrefs’ 300,000-keyword update found the top result’s click-through rate 58% lower when an AI Overview was present. Correlation, but a pre-registered randomised experiment with 1,100 participants found the same direction causally: assignment to Google’s AI Mode cut click-through by 18.8 percentage points.

Being cited claws some of it back. Seer Interactive found brands cited inside an AI Overview got 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than when they were not cited. If the summary is going to sit above you either way, being in it is the better outcome.

Australians are using it. Roy Morgan found 58% of Australians aged 14 and over used an AI tool in an average four weeks in the March quarter 2026, with ChatGPT used by 45%. Telsyte found 12% now call AI tools their main way of finding information online, up from 5% a year earlier. YouGov found 72% of Australian online searchers start at least some searches with an AI assistant, and among those, 35% use it to compare options and 29% to get recommendations. That last group is the one AEO is for.

The case against

The traffic is still tiny. SE Ranking’s study of 101,574 websites found AI platforms sending 0.32% of all website traffic in 2026. Contentsquare’s benchmark of 6,500 sites put it at 0.2% of visits. Growth is fast — sixteen-fold in two years on SE Ranking’s numbers — but from a very small base.

The conversion premium is disputed. The headline figures come mostly from vendors’ own data. Ahrefs reported AI search sending 0.5% of its visitors but 12.1% of its signups. Adobe found AI-referred visitors to US retail sites converting 42% better than other channels in March 2026, after converting 38% worse a year earlier. Against that, Contentsquare found AI traffic converting at 1.3% against 1.9% for email, and a University of Hamburg and Frankfurt School study of 973 online shops found ChatGPT referrals converting worse than every traditional channel except paid social. The honest summary is that nobody yet knows the stable number, and it probably differs by sector.

Google is not dying. Gartner predicted in February 2024 that traditional search engine volume would fall 25% by 2026. There is no independent measurement showing that happened. Google said in April 2026 that queries were at an all-time high, and Similarweb data reported by Search Engine Journal found 95% of ChatGPT users also used Google. And the click losses may be levelling off: Seer’s 2026 update saw click-through on AI Overview queries recover from 1.3% in December 2025 to 2.4% in February 2026.

Most AI answers do not link at all. Similarweb found only about 6.8% of US ChatGPT prompts included a citation by May 2026. A recommendation without a link will never appear in your referral reports.

Reconciling the two

Both sides are measuring something real. What they are measuring differently is where the value lands. The evidence against is mostly about referral clicks. The evidence for is mostly about attention and shortlists. A buyer who asks an assistant for three options, sees your name, and then types your business into Google has been won by AI search and will show up in your analytics as branded search or direct traffic. That is why AI referral numbers undercount, and why a fixed prompt set measuring whether you are named is a better instrument than analytics alone. It is also why this is genuinely hard to prove, and anyone selling AEO who says otherwise is overselling.

The break-even maths

Here is the arithmetic, using our published prices before GST. It answers one question: how many extra clients a year would the work need to win to pay for itself?

Gross margin from one new client Programme at $3,500/month ($42,000/yr) Programme at $7,500/month ($90,000/yr) Audit only ($2,500)
$1,000 42 clients a year 90 clients a year 3 clients
$5,000 9 18 1
$20,000 3 5 1
$50,000 1 2 1

Read across your own row. If you need dozens of extra clients a year to break even, AEO is not for you yet, at our prices or anyone’s; a one-off audit may still be worth it to know where you stand. If you need two or three, and your buyers research before they call, the question becomes whether the work can plausibly win them — which is what an audit is for.

Who it is worth it for, and who should wait

Likely worth it: professional services, B2B and high-consideration purchases where buyers ask for a shortlist before contacting anyone, where one client is worth thousands, and where AI engines already answer questions in your category. See AEO for professional services.

Probably wait: low-margin transactional products, impulse and walk-in purchases, and categories where engines give no meaningful answer yet. For product sellers the shopping layer is changing fast; see AEO for ecommerce.

Cheapest way to find out: the free check, then, if you are absent from answers that exist, the $2,500 + GST audit. It is designed to be allowed to come back and say “not worth it”.

Questions people actually ask

Is AEO worth it for a small business?

It depends on two numbers: what a new client is worth to you, and whether your buyers ask AI assistants before they buy. A high-value professional service with a long research phase often justifies the cost at current prices. A low-value, impulse or walk-in purchase usually does not yet. The free check will show in five minutes whether AI engines answer your category at all.

Does AI search traffic convert better than Google?

The evidence is split. Ahrefs reported AI search sending 0.5% of its visitors but 12.1% of signups, and Adobe found AI-referred visitors to US retail sites converting 42% better than other traffic in March 2026, after converting 38% worse a year earlier. But Contentsquare's 6,500-site benchmark found AI traffic converting at 1.3% against 1.9% for email, and a study of 973 ecommerce sites found ChatGPT referrals converting worse than organic search. Treat any single multiplier with caution.

Is Google search volume actually falling?

Not in any way that has been measured independently. Gartner predicted in February 2024 that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026. Google said in April 2026 that queries were at an all-time high, and Similarweb data reported by Search Engine Journal found 95% of ChatGPT users also used Google. AI appears to be layering on top of search rather than replacing it, while still taking clicks from it.

How long before AEO pays back?

Allow at least three months before judging it. Access fixes take days, but third-party placements take weeks to show up, and AI answers vary so much run to run that one month is a sample rather than a result. If nothing has moved after a properly measured three-month baseline, that is a legitimate reason to stop.

What is the cheapest way to find out whether it is worth it for me?

Run the free check, which costs nothing and takes five minutes. If engines do answer questions in your category and you are absent, a fixed $2,500 + GST audit tells you what it would take, costed, before you commit to anything monthly.
