AEO services: find out who ChatGPT recommends instead of you
Tell us one question your customers ask AI. We run it on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google and Gemini and email you what they said, who they named, and whether it's worth changing. If it is, that's the work we do, re-measured every month.

What a snapshot looks like
A real one. We ran our own buyers' question, so the "instead of you" here is us. Trimmed to who was named; nothing else changed.
Question “best AEO agency in Australia” · run 17 October 2026
Perplexity
Named: SOUP Agency, Luminary, One Egg, Prosperity Media, Digital Nomads HQ
Sources: 18, and 11 of them were "best AEO agencies" lists or directories (bushnote.com, uprisedigital.com.au, thatware.co …)
AEO Services: not named, not cited
OpenAI (ChatGPT family), with web search
Named: Paperstack, Sonar Group
Sources: 2, both the named agencies' own pages (paperstack.com.au, sonargroup.com.au), one of them a case study
AEO Services: not named, not cited
What it would take: Perplexity built its answer from roundup lists, so the work starts with getting onto those lists. OpenAI quoted agencies' own service and case-study pages, so a page on your own site that answers the question has to exist too.
This example came from our monthly index, so it covers two engines, run through their APIs. Your snapshot covers all four listed above. Check it yourself: both stored answers and every source, raw.
- See one for a whole trade: who the AI engines name when Brisbane asks for a plumber, run 31 October 2026, every name from the stored answers.
- And another trade: who the AI engines name when Brisbane asks for an electrician, run 7 November 2026, every name from the stored answers.
- Our method is public. The AI Citation Index for Australia runs 29 buyer questions every month (343 cited domains in October 2026), and the raw data is free to download from GitHub.
- Who does the work: a Brisbane-based sole trader, not a sales team. ABN 45 895 878 134.
Why this matters now, in numbers
That last number is the opportunity and the warning. This category has no established answer yet — in Australia, in most industries, the AI answer is still up for grabs. It will not stay that way. The full measurement, including our own score, is published here →
What we do differently
We don't sell schema markup as an AI visibility service. It is the headline deliverable in most AEO retainers and the best available evidence says it does nothing on its own — Ahrefs tested 1,885 pages and measured a citation change statistically indistinguishable from zero on every engine. We still implement it, because it helps machines parse your pages. We just won't charge you $5,000 a month for it and call it the work.
We spend the budget where the evidence points instead:
- Earned third-party coverage — the single biggest lever. Earned media beats brand-owned content by roughly 325% for AI citation rates.
- Entity clarity — deep, consistent identity signals across authoritative sources. In one 90-day controlled study this produced a +34% citation lift overall and +52% on Gemini and Bing.
- Getting onto the lists engines actually read — the "best X in Australia" roundups, directories and review profiles that answer engines quote. Brands with no active review profile appeared in 1% of answers; brands that actively collected and responded to reviews appeared in 75.3%.
- Extractable content — answer-first structure, real statistics, quotable expert lines. The Princeton GEO study measured lifts of roughly 41% for quotations, 32% for statistics and 30% for inline citations.
- Nothing gated. In the same 90-day study, two gated whitepapers earned 14 citations while open equivalents on the same topics earned 1,847.

Who it's for, and where
The work is the same everywhere; what changes is who your buyers ask and which sources the engines quote for your category. Start with the page closest to you:
How an engagement runs
- Baseline. We build a prompt set from how your buyers actually ask, run it across the major engines, and record who gets cited today. You get the file, not a score out of 100.
- Gap and plan. Which sources the engines are quoting for your category, which ones you are absent from, and what it would take to be in them.
- Execution. Earned placements, entity work, review presence, content rebuilt to be quotable.
- Re-measure monthly. Same prompts, same method, and we tell you if it didn't work.
The honest bit: we're new. We've been live since September 2026, and AI engines don't cite us yet. Our own score is 0 across 29 questions, and we sit at zero in our ranking of the AEO agencies AI engines actually cite. We publish it every month, so you can watch our method work on us (or not) before you pay for anything.

Common questions
What is an answer engine?
An answer engine is an AI tool that writes one answer instead of giving you a list of links: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. When someone asks one of these for a business like yours, it names a few and cites its sources. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the work of measuring whether you're one of the names, and changing the inputs if you're not.
What are AEO services?
AEO services are answer engine optimisation: the work of getting a business named and cited when someone asks an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews for a recommendation, rather than when they type a keyword into Google. The same work is sold as AI SEO and as generative engine optimisation (GEO). In practice the three terms describe one job.
Is AEO the same as AI SEO?
Yes, for buying purposes. "AI SEO" is the term most Australian buyers search for and "AEO" or "GEO" is what practitioners tend to write. All three mean measuring and improving how often AI engines name and cite your business. The differences are mostly marketing. The one real distinction is with traditional SEO, which is about ranking your own pages rather than being quoted in an answer.
Does schema markup improve AI citations?
On its own, no. Ahrefs ran a matched difference-in-differences study on 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD schema and found citation changes of -4.6% in Google AI Overviews, +2.4% in AI Mode and +2.2% in ChatGPT — all statistically indistinguishable from zero. Schema helps machines parse a page, but it is not what makes an answer engine recommend a brand.
What actually gets a brand cited by ChatGPT?
Third-party coverage, mostly. A University of Toronto study found AI search shows a systematic bias toward earned media over brand-owned content, with earned media outperforming owned content by roughly 325% for citation rates. Entity clarity across trusted sources and having content that is easy to extract and quote come next.
How much does AEO cost in Australia?
What other agencies charge: mid-market retainers in this category run about $3,000 to $8,000 a month, with one-off audits between $1,500 and $5,000, and enterprise programmes reach $10,000 to $25,000 a month. Our own prices are published: $2,500 + GST for a fixed audit and $3,500 to $7,500 a month + GST for a programme.
Can you guarantee my brand will appear in ChatGPT?
No, and neither can anyone else. AI answers are non-deterministic and the providers change their retrieval systems without notice. What can be done is measuring citation share across a fixed prompt set over time, and moving the inputs that evidence says matter. We report the measurement whether it moved or not.
What happens after the snapshot?
You get an email within two business days. It shows what each engine said, who it named, the sources it used, and one short paragraph on whether there's anything worth doing. That's it. No call unless you ask for one, and we don't add you to a list. If the engines already name you, we'll say so and you're done. If there's a gap and you want it measured properly, the audit ($2,500 + GST, ten business days) runs 30–50 questions and gives you a costed action list.
Why hire you if your own AI score is zero?
Fair question. We've been live since September 2026, and the engines don't cite us yet. Our score is 0 across 29 buyer questions, and we publish it every month. Two things to weigh. The snapshot and the audit are measurement: you get the stored answers and the sources for your questions, and they're right whether or not anyone cites us. And we're running the same method on ourselves, in public, so you can watch whether our score moves before you pay for the programme. If it doesn't move, that tells you something too.
